Clinical Review on 55 Cases of Eclampsia

Abstract
During four years from 1968 to 1971, 55 cases of eclampsia were treated at the Chonnam University Hospital, and these were reviewed and evaluated clinically, and the following results were obtained.
1. The annual incidence was 2.85% with slightly, increasing trend annually.
2. The peak age distribution was mostly concentrated in twenties, constituting 72.8%, and approximately three quarter of cases were nulliparous.
3. The seasonal incidence was peak in winter, constituting 34. 6%.
4. The antepartal eclampsia was predominant with 67.3% of frequency.
5. The times of fit (convulsion) was mostly within five times, but the severe cases with more than ten times were 10 (18.2%) in number.
6. The majority cases of eclampsia were treated conservatively with anticonvulsants and sedatives mainly such as magnesium sulfate, phenobarbital, valium and morphine sulfate.
The vaginal delivery was predominant, but there were 4 cases of Cesarean section with indication of malposition or malpresentation and CPD.
7. The immediate and associated maternal morbidity was relatively rare with pneumonia, lung edema, papilledema and retinal hemorrhage.
The maternal death was one in number and uncorrected maternal mortality was 1.82%.
8. The prematurity rate was 37.4% and the number of low Apgar score baby was 13 cases. The number of stillbirth was 6 cases and the fetal death rate 12.5%.
